Lymphedema Therapy

Lymphedema is the accumulation of protein rich fluid in the tissues causing swelling.  Your body is made of lymph vessels that transport fluid and the lymph nodes filter impurities and fight infection.  Damage to these vessels or nodes can cause an interruption of the transport of the fluid and causes swelling in the limb.  Lymphedema is not curable, but is treatable with Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT).

WHO IS AT RISK? Once the lymphatic system is damaged, you are at risk for lymphedema. Lymphedema can occur in weeks, months, or take as long as 20 years to develop.  That makes prevention important.

Not all swelling is necessarily lymphedema; however, Manual Lymphatic Drainage massage can be used to reduce swelling in a limb caused by other conditions including:

  • Arthritis
  • Sprains/strains and dislocations
  • Following surgery to the arms and legs
  • Torn muscles
  • Cancer surgeries/radiation treatment
  • Venous insufficiency
  • Treatment of fractures
  • Total knee replacements

MANAGEMENT:  Complete Decongestive Therapy consists of Manual Lymphatic Drainage massage.  This massage moves the lymph fluid and stimulates healthy lymph nodes so they take up the excess fluid in the affected area.  Compression bandaging and garments are used to prevent return of fluid into the involved limb.  Treatment also involves remedial exercises to increase flow of the lymphatic fluid and keeps muscles and joints healthy.  Skin care is also an important component of treatment to prevent the risk of infection.

TREATMENT FOR LYMPHEDEMA:  If you have been diagnosed with lymphedema by your doctor, treatment is available at Orthopedic Foot, Ankle & Knee Institute.  The following can be expected for treatment of lymphedema:

  • Treatment can last two to six weeks, three to five times a week, depending on the severity and number of extremities involved.
  • Comprehensive lymphedema treatment consists of manual lymphatic drainage, compression bandages, exercise and skin/hygiene care.
  • Treatment is aimed at patient/family teaching so that the patient becomes independent with managing the lymphedema.
  • The goal of treatment is to decrease the swelling in order to increase the patient's quality of life by preventing infections, improving appearance and skin integrity, and increasing function for daily living.
